Holiday Wish - Help Ed Bryant

It has come to my attention that noted writer and critic Ed Bryant needs our help. Due to financial complications surrounding recent heart bypass surgery, a limited income, and some assholes who took advantage of his kindness, he has been struggling to buy the insulin needed to keep him alive (Ed is a Type I diabetic) and nearly lost his home to foreclosure.

My local newspaper (Florida Today) has begun its annual "90 Seconds to Fame" film contest. My film "Deer Santa" is available for viewing and voting! The movie even got a blurb in an accompanying article (See link below). The first round of voting began today and will run through the week. The top three films move on to the next round. Mary Robinette Kowal has tuckerized me in her new novel! See, MRK is on her way to becoming a world-famous writer. I will now be able to ride her coattails to success.

Right now I am addicted to Grand Theft Auto 4 on the Xbox 360. It's a far superior game compared to the previous GTAs. Those games were just too damn hard. And I have no patience for playing games that require any skill!

3rd Place or no place at all

I'm semi-pleased to announce that "Unwarranted Serendipity" placed third in the diemonday.com contest. I win 50 bucks.

I'm pleased because I already had the story written and the only work I had to do was to submit the story.

The "semi" part is because I wanted to win. :)

A few people have asked me what I have on the burner in terms of fiction. Right now I have 10 stories circulating. I'm stlil trying to break into a "professional" level publication. But then, aren't most of us? I did get invited into a small anthology...but that's still hush-hush. The big deal here is that it's the first time someone has sought me out for an anthology.

I was recently asked to write 14 flash stories for a musician's CD booklet to accompany the music. This one pays pro-level rates. Ka-ching!

I'm considering putting together a pitch for a Sizemore horror collection. Though would it be arrogant of me to do so even though my only real claim to fame is Apex Publications and not my writing? Hmm. I think I might give this one a shot.

Enough self-indulgent musings for now.

mabfan wanted to know a little more about the contest, so here we go.
debtaber pointed it out to me a couple of weeks ago. Basically, diemonday is a humor blog targeted at those folks needing a bit of levity during their workday. They are kicking off the site with a short story contest for work-related stories. The contest was free to enter with great prizes (first gets $200, second $100, third $50, and fourth a sponge gun).

Well, I happened to have a nice piece coming out in a book I'm publishing later this summer by the wonderful Alethea Kontis (she invited me to submit something, so that helped my mind reconcile the self-publishing conundrum). I asked Alethea if she minded I entered the story in the contest. She waved her wand and said "Let it be so."

They story is a fictionalized and highly exaggerated retelling of my first fan convention experience (and meeting Alethea for the first time).

While I'd be delighted to win $50 or even the cool sponge gun (my little girl would go nuts with such a toy), I have my eye on the big prize: $200.

Milton, Christmas Fairy in Aoife's Kiss

A couple of years ago I was challenged by a friend to write something that I could read to my kid. I stepped up to the challenge and wrote a fairy tale called "Milton, Christmas Fairy." That story is now available in the December '07 issue (#23) of Aoife's Kiss.

It's a holiday story. And it happens to be the holidays...plus, I share the ToC with the wonderful Mary Robinette Kowal.
